Recycling helps protect the environment and generates income 22/01/2021 - 14:43

However, correct waste disposal demands correct separation of the materials. The Environment Department reinforces this information, so that employees respect the destination indicated in the dumps, separating organic and recyclable waste. The appeal extends to all port workers and the population, in general, at the time of waste separation!

“We, as citizens, are responsible for a very important stage in the management of solid waste that we generate in our daily lives. When we properly separate our waste, what is recyclable can be sent to waste pickers' associations, generating income for the associates”, highlights Juliana Vendrami, a biologist at Portos do Paraná.

Thus, the more material that is recycled, the less waste will be thrown into landfills, increasing the useful life of the sites. "Recycling implies reducing pressure on natural resources, such as forests and oil extraction for the production of new products, and also avoids environmental pollution", she explains.

RECYCLERS - The Association of Waste Pickers of Vila Santa Maria (Assepar) receives the recyclable waste produced in the Port of Paranaguá. Recycling materials is the only source of income for members and a partnership with the port community is essential.

The group was founded in 2006, by families who worked at the dump in the municipality. “We sell all the material separated and pressed and divide it according to the hours worked”, says Regina Brüning, president of the Association.

According to her, everyone works eight hours a day, in various functions. In addition to receiving selective collection trucks from the municipality, most of the materials come from private companies.

CARE - “The separation needs to be well done because here in the association we are 24 (people) working and there is a lot of syringe, broken glass and, sometimes, even dead dogs in the middle and they are dangerous materials. Have you ever wondered if someone here gets cut or gets an infection? If any of us needs to stay at home for 15 days, what will we earn? How are we going to keep the house, the children? ”, warns Andreia de Souza Rosa, vice president and recycler at Assepar. According to her, as this is the only source of income for members, relying on people's partnership is essential so that recycling can be expanded. “I ask everyone to help us and make the separation correctly. Broken glasses and cans with sharp parts should be placed inside bottles or inside a milk carton. If they notice, we are the main responsible for cleaning the city! ”, concludes Andreia.
