PR Ports: Best Environmental Development Index in Brazil 22/01/2021 - 14:40

There are 20 permanent employees, in Paranaguá, and another 50 specialized professionals supporting environmental actions. “Sustainable development is possible and Paraná has proven it over time. Each year, our activities show the importance of investing in programs to protect our bay and raise awareness for future generations”, explains the director of Environment of the public company Portos do Paraná, João Paulo Ribeiro Santana.

EVOLUTION - In the last five years, the ports of Paraná have grown in cargo handling and in nature care. The Port of Paranaguá has been recognized every year for the actions carried out. In addition to Antaq's Environmental Management Index, recognition came at the last Climate Conference, in an event held by the United Nations (UN), in 2019.

ACTIONS - Environmental programs are classified into three means of action: physical, biotic and socioeconomic.
At sea, 3.010 inspections have been carried out on ships to check ballast water - used to maintain the weight and stability of vessels.
The teams have also collected 1.634 water samples, and 93.720 parameter analyzes have been performed. At the bottom of the Paranaguá and Antonina bays, 437 sediment samples have been collected, resulting in more than 16,000 analyzes between 2016 and 2020.
On land, between 2016 and 2020, the teams have made more than 20 thousand measurements of the smoke expelled by trucks and other machines. In addition, air quality has been monitored for 552 days at 12 points in Paranaguá and three in Antonina.
In the noise assessments, 2.440 measurements have already been made, totaling 203 hours in 21 points in Paranaguá and eight points in Antonina.
The results are also expressive in the communication with the population, with 18 campaigns carried out: 4.287 radio spots, 52 advertising campaigns in newspapers of great local circulation and the dissemination of 186 billboards regarding he environmental programs of Portos do Paraná.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIONS - More than 5.300 children participated in educational workshops in the municipal schools of Paranaguá, Antonina and Pontal do Paraná. In the fishing communities, there were 11 participatory socio-environmental diagnosis workshops, with 153 participants. With port workers, 104 training courses on solid waste have been carried out.

FISH AND MANGROVE ASSESSMENT - Almost 43.000 fishing discharges were monitored and approximately 1.657 tons of fish were recorded. The program's database includes 1.649 fishing vessels in the Antonina and Paranaguá bays.
In the mangroves, 113 cleaning actions were carried out and more than 11 tons of waste were removed.
In the monitoring of the aquatic biota, more than 3 thousand samples were collected in the bays of Antonina and Paranaguá.

FAUNA - About 9.300 km were sailed to spot dolphins and turtles, during 100 days of monitoring. As a result, 335 different gray porpoises were cataloged. In the air, the teams identified 150 species of birds in 212 days of activity.

In order to decrease and control populations of disease-transmitting vectors, 19 campaigns were carried out to assess the level of rodent infestation and the population estimate of pigeons.
